One problem that hinders a lot of people’s ability to sleep effectively is snoring. According to studies, 40 percent of men and 25 percent of women suffer from snoring. And, about one-third of people between the ages of 55 to 84 suffer with a snoring problem as well.
Although many people suffer from it, few people seem to be aware of the serious medical consequences that can come from snoring. It is important to eliminate the problem if you have one. In doing so, you will sleep better and be more healthy. Here are some tips to help you in your efforts:
- Sleep On Your Side. Most people snore when they are lying on their back. Also, when you sleep on your stomach, you put unnecessary stress on your neck.
- Lose Weight. When you have more weight on your body than normal, you most likely have more weight around your neck area. This puts pressure on the airway, which causes it to partially collapse when you breathe while sleeping.
- Avoid Alcohol and Tranquilizers. Alcohol and sleeping pills relax the muscles in your throat and jaw. This makes a person more likely to snore. Also, these substances are known to contribute to the problem of sleep apnea.
- Get Your Allergies Treated. Respiratory problems are often linked to snoring. When you suffer from allergies, you tend to breathe through your mouth while you sleep. If you take an antihistamine before bedtime, it may help.
- Buy a Mouth Guard. You can get this from your dentist or doctor. It will help you to stop snoring by holding your teeth together. It also prevents your lower jaw muscles from becoming too lazy.
- Stop Smoking. Smoking will damage your respiratory system and hurt your breathing.
- Keep a Regular Schedule. Make sure that you sleep enough and that you sleep on routine. Go to bed the same time everyday and wake up the same time everyday.
- See a Doctor if You Are Pregnant and Snoring. Sometimes women snore when they are pregnant because they gain weight and their hormones change. However, you need to make sure your baby is getting the oxygen it needs.
- Elevate Your Head. When you raise your head at night, you take pressure off your airway. This makes it easier for you to breathe. You can put blocks under your bedposts or buy more pillows.
